About PDF Split

Break a large PDF into smaller files. Leave the range box empty to save every page as its own PDF, or type ranges such as 1-3;4-6;7-z to split it into parts, where "z" means the last page. All the new files can be downloaded together in a single ZIP.

Two ways to split a PDF

  • Every page as its own PDF: leave Ranges empty. A 12-page PDF becomes 12 separate files, named by page number.
  • Your own parts: type the page ranges you want, separated by semicolons. Each range becomes one PDF.

How to write page ranges

  • 1-3;4-6;7-z makes three files: pages 1 to 3, pages 4 to 6, and page 7 to the end. z (or last) always means the last page, so you do not need to count.
  • 1;2-z separates a cover page from the rest of the document.
  • 1-2,5;3-4 uses commas to put pages that are not next to each other in the same file: the first file gets pages 1, 2 and 5, the second gets pages 3 and 4.
  • z-1 counts backwards and gives you the pages in reverse order.

If a range goes past the last page, you get a clear message telling you how many pages the PDF has, so you can fix it and try again.

Split, extract or remove: which tool to use

  • Split (this tool) when you want several separate PDFs, for example to upload documents one by one to a form with a size limit.
  • Extract pages from PDF when you want one new PDF with just the pages you choose.
  • PDF page remover when you want to keep the document but delete a few pages, such as blank backs of scans.
  • PDF Merge to join parts back together later.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into specific parts?

Type each range separated by a semicolon, for example 1-5;6-10;11-z. Each range becomes a separate PDF.

Can I just take a few pages out?

Yes, but our Extract Pages from PDF tool is quicker if you only need one new file with the pages you choose.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied exactly as they are, without re-compressing text or images.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied exactly as they are, so text, images and links stay identical to the original.

How do I download all the parts?

Each part appears in the results list. Download them one by one, or all together as a ZIP file.
