About Video Converter

Convert videos between MP4, MOV, WEBM, AVI, MKV, WMV, FLV, 3GP and more, so they play on any phone, TV, editor or website. Choose the output format, then optionally pick a quality level and a smaller resolution such as 1080p or 720p. You can convert several videos in one go.

Which format should you choose?

  • MP4 is the safest choice. It plays on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, smart TVs and every major website. When in doubt, choose MP4.
  • MOV suits Apple devices and editing in Final Cut Pro or iMovie.
  • WEBM is made for websites and gives small files in modern browsers.
  • MKV is a flexible container popular for films and archiving.
  • AVI, WMV, FLV and 3GP are older formats. Choose them only when an old device, program or school system asks for them.
  • GIF turns a short clip into a looping animation; for more control use Video to GIF.

Quality and resolution, explained simply

Quality decides how much detail is kept in each frame. Standard (default) looks like the original on phones and laptops. High keeps more detail for editing or big screens but makes the file bigger. Smaller file saves space, with softer detail in fast-moving scenes.

Resolution sets the size of the picture. Keep original is right most of the time. To make a video much smaller, choose a lower resolution: 1080p (Full HD) is plenty for most screens, 720p is good for sharing on messaging apps and email, and 480p or 360p for the smallest files. Choosing a higher resolution than the original does not add detail, so the converter is most useful for going down, not up.

Tips for faster, smaller videos

  • Trim first. If you only need part of a video, cut it with Trim Video before converting.
  • Just need it smaller? Video Compressor keeps your format and focuses on file size.
  • Need only the sound? Choose MP3 with Video to MP3 instead of converting the whole video.
  • iPhone videos that will not play on Windows? Convert MOV to MP4 at the default settings; it fixes the problem in most cases.

Frequently asked questions

Which format should I choose?

MP4 is the safest choice. It plays on almost every phone, computer, TV and social network. Pick WEBM for websites, or MOV for editing on a Mac.

Can I make my video smaller while converting?

Yes. Open Options and choose a lower resolution or the Smaller file quality. Videos are never made larger than their original resolution.

Can I turn a video into a GIF?

Yes. Choose GIF as the output format, or use our Video to GIF tool for extra options like start time and length.

Which video format works everywhere?

MP4. It plays on practically every phone, computer, smart TV, browser and social network, so it is the best choice when you are not sure what the other person uses.

How can I make a video file smaller?

Choose a lower resolution such as 720p and the Smaller file quality, or use the Video Compressor. Trimming parts you do not need also helps a lot.
