About Video Compressor
Shrink big video files so you can send them by email or messaging apps, upload them faster, or save space. Pick how strong the compression should be and, if you like, lower the resolution to 720p or 480p for even smaller files. Works with MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM and more.
Choosing a compression level
- Light (best quality): the video looks the same as the original, and the saving is moderate. Good for videos you will edit or watch on a big screen.
- Medium (default): the best balance. Most phone videos become much smaller and still look sharp on phones, laptops and messaging apps.
- Strong: clearly smaller files with slightly softer detail, especially in fast motion. Fine for sharing and email.
- Maximum (smallest): for strict size limits. Expect visible softness, but faces and text stay recognisable.
Lower the resolution for the biggest savings
Phones often record in 4K or 1080p, which is far more than a chat window or email needs. Choosing a lower resolution shrinks the video much more than the compression level alone: 1080p keeps Full HD for TVs and laptops, 720p is ideal for WhatsApp, email and most websites, and 480p or 360p gives the smallest files for slow connections. The picture is scaled down evenly, so nothing looks stretched.
MP4, MOV, MKV and WEBM videos keep their format, so an MP4 stays an MP4. Older formats such as AVI, WMV or FLV are saved as MP4, which plays everywhere and compresses much better. To choose a different format yourself, use Video Converter.
More ways to make a video smaller
- Cut what you do not need. Trim Video removes the start and end; a 30-second clip instead of 2 minutes is about four times smaller.
- Only need the sound? Video to MP3 keeps just the audio, which is a tiny fraction of the size.
- Making a short loop? Video to GIF turns a few seconds into an animation for chats and slides.
- Avoid compressing the same video again and again. Each pass loses a little more detail; go back to the original and choose a stronger level instead.
Frequently asked questions
Will my video look worse?
Light and Medium compression usually look almost the same as the original on a phone or laptop. Strong and Maximum make much smaller files with more visible loss.
What's the best setting to make a video much smaller?
Lowering the resolution saves the most space. 720p looks good on phones and is often several times smaller than a 4K or 1080p original.
Does it keep the sound?
Yes. The audio track is kept in the compressed video.
How much smaller will my video get?
It depends on the original. Phone videos recorded at high bitrates often shrink by 50 to 80% on Medium, and much more if you also choose 720p. Videos that were already compressed by an app shrink less.
Will the sound be affected?
The soundtrack is kept and saved at a good quality for speech and music, so voices stay clear. Most of the size saving comes from the picture.
